Cohiba Cigars – The Ultimate Cigar Experience
There is perhaps no other word in the cigar smokers lexicon that inspires such desire, passion and ardor than the word Cohiba. They are the stuff of legend. They are the smuggler's gold, the diplomat's prize and the revolutionary's cigar of choice. Illusive and rarely seen, Cohiba cigars are the subject of so much rumor and gossip that it's sometime hard to separate and fact from fiction. This much, though, is true - Cohiba cigars are the sterling standard of the cigar world.
The Cohiba story begin in Cuba shortly after Fidel Castro's rise to power in the Cuban revolution. Castro noticed that one of his bodyguards smoked cigars that had a very pleasing aroma. He asked this bodyguard if he could try one of his cigars and found that the cigar smoked better than it smelled. He discovered that the bodyguard was obtaining these cigars from an cigar maker in Havana. Castro approached this cigar maker and eventually set him and five assistants up in their own manufacturing facility outside of Havana. The Cohiba brand was born.
Castro began to smoke Cohiba's exclusively. He also gave the cigars away as gifts to diplomats and visiting dignitaries. However, the small production capacity of the manufacturing facility, along with the U.S. trade embargo against Cuba, made the cigars extremely rare outside of Cuba. Thus, the mystique of the Cohiba cigar began. People who knew people began smuggling the cigars into the United States. If you knew someone who had some, you went out of your way to try and get a few. Truth and rumor spread. So much so, that cigars even became the subject of a running joke on "The Seinfeld Show". Yup. Cosmo Kramer was smoking Cohiba cigars.
Today, it's a little easier to get your hands on a Cohiba, but they are still rare and they are still the cigar world's biggest prize. So, if you're lucky enough to find some Cohiba Cigars, sit back, light up and enjoy the cigar born of a revolution.
